Hidden Cotswold Tour April 28th 2025

THe Folly in the Deer Park at Great Barrington

Brett got in touch with me through a mutual friend and we booked up this day well in advance.
There was a little hiccup on the date!
But all was well in the end and I was at the Fox to meet the rest of the party: Jennelle, Faye and Neil.

We stopped briefly to look at the folly in the deer park in Barrington before driving on to Bourton-on-the-Water.
We agreed to drive slowly through Bourton, despite it being not too crowded.

Lower Slaughter Mill

This is where I wanted to stop, Lower Slaughter.  This village is much quieter and in my opinion more beautiful.  I let everyone out to walk along the banks of the river Eye and up to the Mill.
It’s turning out to be a wonderful sunny day.

A short drive up the hill and past Upper Slaughter Manor, the Texan Billionaire’s weekend cottage, and parked .
A short walk up to and into the small Norman Church, which lists its first rector back to 1265.

Our next stop was at Stanway House.  Where we disembarked and had a good view of the Jacobean Manor House from the Church Yard.
We stopped to look at the Earl’s personal cricket pitch and pavilion.

We drove slowly though the pretty little village of Stanton, stopping to see the fox on the thatched roof, the village cricket pitch and to allow a large group of horses and riders out on their morning trek.

Broadway Tower

Driving slowly through the town of Broadway, we headed for the top of the hill and Broadway Tower.
Everyone got out of the car and had a walk up to and around (and in) the tower.

By now it was lunch time and I dropped everyone off at the Eight Bells Pub in Chipping Campden.
Picking them up an hour later  they were well fed and we walked up to and around the impressive “Wool” Church of St James.
A walk back down the High Street, stopping at the Tourist Information Office.

Lake at Donnington Brewery

As they were staying at the Fox, a Donnington Pub, it was only right to drop down into the hidden Brewery itself.

The last stop was in Stow-on-the-Wold to have a little walk around and to point out the Porch House.
We decided now to head back to the pub via Burford.
